SERBIA TO ROMANIA - THE IRON GATES

Days 14-17: Belgrade to Iron Gates (via Ram, Donji Milanovac)

Day 17: The Iron Gates Transit - Most Dramatic Section

IRON GATES (Đerdap) - Where Danube Cuts Through Carpathians

What is it? The Iron Gates is where the Danube cuts through the Carpathian Mountains, creating spectacular gorge with limestone cliffs rising 300+ meters from water. For millennia, this was the Danube's most dangerous section - narrow, rocky, violent rapids. Roman Emperor Trajan built road carved into cliffsides (remnants visible).

1960s-70s: Yugoslavia and Romania built two massive hydroelectric dams, flooded rapids, raised water 35 meters, created huge locks. Gorge now navigable but remains spectacular.

Navigation:

Iron Gates II Lock (km 863):

  • Smaller lock (27m drop)
  • Usually pass without major wait

The Gorge (km 863-943):

  • Spectacular scenery - sheer limestone cliffs, forests, eagles
  • Decebalus Rex (km 953, Romanian side): Massive rock carving of ancient Dacian king face (2004, 43m high) - unmissable
  • Deep water (50+ meters)
  • Strong current (up to 8 km/h)

Iron Gates I Lock (km 943) - THE BIG ONE:

  • Massive lock chamber - 34-meter lift (one of Europe's largest)
  • Commercial traffic priority - pleasure boats often wait
  • VHF Contact Required: Ch. 16, then working channel
  • Waiting: 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on traffic
  • Lock Fee: ~€20-30
  • Process:
    • Radio contact 10 km upstream
    • Enter when green light
    • Secure to floating bollards
    • 34m lift takes ~15 minutes
    • Impressive experience

Serbia-Romania Border:

  • At lock (km 943)
  • Exit Serbia, Enter Romania
