🌊 BAY OF BISCAY - THE GAUNTLET

Distance: Brest to Northern Spain - ~300-400 NM

Time: 3-5 days

Character: Infamous. Strong winds, big swells, sudden storms, shipwreck coast

Why is Biscay notorious?

  1. Atlantic swells - Long-period waves from open ocean pile up in Biscay's shallower waters
  2. Weather systems - Low-pressure systems from Atlantic hit here
  3. Wind acceleration - Geography funnels winds
  4. Rocky coasts - Spain's north coast (Galicia, Asturias, Basque Country) is unforgiving

Hundreds of ships wrecked here. Medieval, Age of Sail, modern.

Strategy:

Wait for good weather:

  • Forecast stable 4-5 days
  • Wind <25 knots
  • Swell <3m
  • No gales approaching

Departure: Summer (May-September) safer. Avoid October-April (winter storms).

Route options:

  1. Direct - Straight across (shortest, most exposed)
  2. Coastal - Follow French/Spanish coast (longer, more sheltered options)

Most sailors: Wait in Brest for perfect weather, then go direct.

During crossing:

  • Watch system (3-4 hour shifts)
  • Monitor weather continuously
  • Reef early
  • Engine ready
  • If conditions worsen: Heave to, or run for nearest Spanish port

If in doubt, wait. Biscay has killed overconfident sailors.

⚓ Atlantic vs Mediterranean - Marine Life

Atlantic (Biscay, Portuguese Coast):

Fish:

  • Hake (merluza ES / hake EN) - White fish, delicate, Basque specialty (merluza a la vasca)
  • Sardines (sardinhas PT / sardines EN) - Grilled whole, Portuguese classic
  • Tuna (atún ES / atum PT / tuna EN) - Bluefin, albacore, Spanish/Portuguese love this
  • Monkfish (rape ES / monkfish EN) - Ugly, delicious
  • Octopus (pulpo ES / polvo PT / octopus EN) - Galician specialty (pulpo a la gallega)
  • Percebes (goose barnacles) - Expensive delicacy, harvested from rocks in rough seas, €60-100/kg

How they cook:

  • Basque: Olive oil, garlic, parsley (a la vasca style), simple
  • Galician: Boiled/grilled, paprika, olive oil, potatoes
  • Portuguese: Grilled over charcoal, salt, olive oil (piri-piri sauce optional)

Marine mammals:

  • Fin whales - Second-largest whale, seen in Biscay
  • Pilot whales - Dark, rounded heads
  • Dolphins - Common, striped, bottlenose (bow-riding)

Seabirds:

  • Gannets - Diving from height
  • Shearwaters - Gliding low over waves
  • Storm petrels - Tiny, flutter over water
