🌊 BAY OF BISCAY - THE GAUNTLET
Distance: Brest to Northern Spain - ~300-400 NM
Time: 3-5 days
Character: Infamous. Strong winds, big swells, sudden storms, shipwreck coast
Why is Biscay notorious?
- Atlantic swells - Long-period waves from open ocean pile up in Biscay's shallower waters
- Weather systems - Low-pressure systems from Atlantic hit here
- Wind acceleration - Geography funnels winds
- Rocky coasts - Spain's north coast (Galicia, Asturias, Basque Country) is unforgiving
Hundreds of ships wrecked here. Medieval, Age of Sail, modern.
Strategy:
Wait for good weather:
- Forecast stable 4-5 days
- Wind <25 knots
- Swell <3m
- No gales approaching
Departure: Summer (May-September) safer. Avoid October-April (winter storms).
Route options:
- Direct - Straight across (shortest, most exposed)
- Coastal - Follow French/Spanish coast (longer, more sheltered options)
Most sailors: Wait in Brest for perfect weather, then go direct.
During crossing:
- Watch system (3-4 hour shifts)
- Monitor weather continuously
- Reef early
- Engine ready
- If conditions worsen: Heave to, or run for nearest Spanish port
If in doubt, wait. Biscay has killed overconfident sailors.
