LEG 1.7: ARENDAL → LILLESAND

Distance: 20 NM

Duration: 4 hours @ 5 kts

Route Character: Sheltered inner archipelago

Route Description

Pleasant passage through well-marked inner channels. Very protected route with numerous islands providing shelter.

Navigation Waypoints

  1. Departure: Arendal Pollen (58°27.6'N, 8°46.2'E)

  2. Tromøy southern tip: (58°23.4'N, 8°50.4'E) - Stay in marked channel

  3. Justøya passage: (58°18.0'N, 8°55.8'E) - Narrow but well-marked

  4. Brekkestø approach: (58°15.6'N, 8°57.0'E) - Fishing village (optional stop)

  5. Arrival: Lillesand (58°14.4'N, 8°22.8'E)

Hazards & Considerations

  • Justøya passage: Narrow (50m); favor center of channel; 3m minimum depth

  • Rock outcrops: Numerous but well-marked with red/green lateral marks

  • Fishing activity: Moderate; nets and pots marked with small buoys

  • Local traffic: Small ferries and fishing boats use these waters; maintain watch

  • Brekkestø option: Can stop at Brekkestø for provisions if weather deteriorates (sheltered anchorage)

  • Channel navigation: Stay between lateral marks; deviation can lead to grounding

Current & Tide

  • Tidal range: 0.3-0.5 m

  • Current: 0-0.5 kts generally; up to 1 kt in Justøya passage

  • Direction: Flood NE, ebb SW following coastline

  • Timing: Passage easy at any tidal state

  • Navigation impact: Minimal; wind more significant factor

Wind & Weather

  • Prevailing wind (May-June): SW-W 8-15 kts

  • Sheltering: Excellent throughout route; islands block swell and seas

  • Sea state: 0.2-0.4m maximum; calm even in force 5 outside

  • Fog risk: 15-20% May-June; navigation feasible with careful chart work

  • Best conditions: Suitable in all but gale force winds

  • Weather refuge: This route ideal as "bad weather alternative" to outer coast

Leg 1.7: Arendal to Kristiansand

Distance: 45 NM

Time: 6-8 hours

Navigation: More exposed, entering Skagerrak proper

Weather: Check carefully—this is where you start feeling the North Sea

Character: Major city ahead

KRISTIANSAND, NORWAY [QR-030]

Coordinates: 58°09'N, 8°00'E

Marina: Kristiansand Gjestehavn (multiple options - East Harbor, West Harbor)

Berth Cost: €50-75/night

Character: Norway's 5th largest city, sunny (relatively—it's called "Sunshine City"), good nightlife, last major provisioning before rounding Lista

Posebyen [QR-031] - Old wooden town, grid pattern, painted houses, very cute.

Kristiansand Dyrepark [QR-032] - If you have kids (or love zoos), this is Norway's biggest zoo/amusement park. Not relevant to most sailors.

Provisioning: Excellent. Large stores, marine supplies, this is your last chance before Stavanger.

Repair facilities:

Kristiansand Marina Service [QR-033]

  • Engine repairs, rigging, electronics
  • +47 38 02 69 00

Dining:

🍴 Sjøhuset [QR-034] - East Harbor

🍴 Bønder i Byen [QR-035] - Farm-to-table

  • Modern Norwegian
  • €40-70

Nightlife: Markens Gate (pedestrian street) has bars, live music. Norwegians drink expensive beer slowly.

Stay 2-3 nights - Rest, provision, prepare for Lista rounding.

PART 3: ROUNDING LISTA - THE GAUNTLET

⚠️ This is where it gets real.

Lista Peninsula is Norway's southern tip. Exposed to North Sea weather, notorious for rough conditions, the graveyard of overconfident sailors.

Strategy:

  1. Wait for good weather (2-3 day calm window minimum)
  2. Leave early morning (calm winds)
  3. Check forecasts obsessively
  4. If in doubt, wait

Don't rush this. Seriously.
